Songs bought in iTunes “not authorized to play” – FIX!!!!

Ive seen messages all over google pretty much about:

My computer says it is not authorized to play certain songs. When I try to authorize it, it takes my password XXXXX however, does not actually authorize it.

and so on…

Well, today (2/5/12) I bought an album Wester – Danger Music, everything was downloaded and added to my iTunes. 1 Problem thou, one of the songs would not play, I kept getting the error message: iTunes – “not authorized to play on this computer”

I tried the options from ( iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases

Those did not work for me, so what I did to fix this issue was very simple.

1. Delete the song in iTunes to remove from your library and hard drive

2. Open the iTunes Store

3. Make sure you are signed in with the same account used for the original purchase

4. Tap Purchased from the bottom navigation bar in the Features category

5. From the Purchased tab, tap the artist name for the content you intend to download again

6. Once you’ve located the music you are looking for, tap the download button

(If you want to download all songs from an album that you’ve purchased, click on the button to switch to the “Album” view.)

Hope your issue is Fixed!

Thats it! I was stuck trying to figure out a fix for an hour, and finally figured this out.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Worked for me, too. For me, the download button appeared as a small icon inside the upper right corner of the album icon. The icon is a cloud with a down arrow.

    Many thanks!!

My problem involves content downloaded before the iTunes reboot in 2010.
Of my 3000 songs or so, had about 200 songs purchased in 2009 (or earlier) which were associated to my account, and everything was fine, until…
hard drive crashes. Need to re-load iTunes (12.x). Now it’s giving me the “authorization” nonsense, which after login still doesn’t correct the problem. The unhelpful folks at Apple look into it via chat, say that another ipod has those songs purchased on the same day (apparently a friend shared my content), so they’re associated to that account, even though it’s my credit card and account info for the purchases. No “purchased” history because it’s prior to 2010.
Any ideas, or am I out of luck?

I am in the same boat as you. Purchases made before 2010. Guess we are out of luck and wasted all of our money. I will never buy another song from iTunes as long as I live.

    Thanks so much!!

Something else that worked for me with less steps ~ right-click the track that won’t play, and one of the last options is “remove download.” Then you’ll still see the track, but it will be greyed out with a cloud next to it. Click the cloud to download it again, and it will work just fine! At least that’s what happened with me! It will delete from any playlists you’ve put it in, though, so make sure you add those back. Best of luck to other Itunes strugglers!

Just tried this. Deleted two songs and there was no gray cloud so the songs are just deleted. I purchased this music about 10 years ago….

Thanks for the tip. Only problem is I purchased this music 10 years ago and do not remember my original Apple ID and password so I can never retrieve about $400 worth of music I purchased from iTunes!!!! Every time I try to play the songs I PAID FOR, it says my computer is not authorized. Then, when I sign in to Apple with my new user name and ID to authorize, it says this computer is already authorized!!!! But it STILL WON”T PLAY THE DAMN SONG!!!! Fed up with iTunes!
